The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Players will gain the ability to contest certain calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
